If you’re viewing this blog post, chances are you have an idea of the real world difference between off the shelf canned tunes and a complete custom calibration. For many, mail order calibrations based on vehicle notes (modifications/driving style etc) is the only option. Truth be told, the people that arrive to us with canned/basemap calibrations end up being lifetime clients once we’ve given their ECU a once over. Drivability is one of our biggest concerns, WOT is fairly simple in comparison. We believe this to be what separates us from the pack!

MOVING ALONG…..We had a great example of the contrast between the two tuning styles with Sam’s BRZ. It arrived to our shop with a mixture of small issues. Boost level was inconsistent, AFR was pig rich in various spots on the map, would die out in traffic regularly, choppy low speed/low RPM cruising, so on and so forth. From a mechanical standpoint, we battled boost levels a bit but ended up getting the curve where we needed it. On 7-8lbs of boost, we were able to churn out 315-320whp from run to run with great consistency. The turbo kit is a custom unit built by Driven Performance, and uses an internally gated Borg Warner, front mount, full exhaust, stock injectors. The kit looked to be great quality with much attention to detail. The FR-S/BRZ community has been one of our biggest supporters in recent years. We have invested hundreds of hours in seat time to learn these systems front to back, all in the name of passing that knowledge into our clients ECUs! This BRZ arrived from Pennsylvania for a complete transformation – power, looks and handling were all addressed during it’s one week visit. For power, a Greddy FRS/BRZ Turbo kit and full exhaust was installed and tuned by Dynosty using EcuTek. Power improved from 148whp to 262whp, a 77% increase! To plant the power and improve handling, Bilstein suspension was installed along with new graphite grey Gram Light 57xtreme wheels and tires. The front of the car was outfitted with a Seibon carbon-fiber FRS BRZ hood and a splitter. The rear was rounded out with a new set of tail lights and a carbon fiber diffuser. The end result is a model of well-rounded modifications to improve the performance of the Subaru BRZ.
Tomei just released their new line of light-weight Titanium performance exhaust systems for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. Options exist for street and race applications, naturally aspirated and forced induction high performance. We recommend the 80mm 3″ titanium exhaust for turbo and supercharged FR-S BRZ applications.

We had the opportunity to get the Turbo Scion FR-S to the 1/4 mile drag strip, and while we arrived later than anticipated, we were able to squeeze in 2 runs before they closed Lucas Oil Raceway for the season. The FR-S passed tech inspection and lined up in the lanes, as the announcer stated “No more vehicles to the lanes – this is the last pass of the night.” The first pass down the track yielded a 11.1 @ 127.9mph on a soft launch, setting the current world record for Quickest and Fastest FR-S / BRZ. On the return road the track official was kind enough to wave us into the lanes again considering we only had 1 run. The second pass backed up the 11.1 with an 11.2. There is a lot left in the car, and we hope to get to another track before they close for winter. Stay tuned for more!
